The contents of the book have been assembled from the material sub-mitted to the 14th International Colloquium on Pulsed and Continu¬ous Detonations (April 22-26, 2024, St. Petersburg, Russia) dedicated to the 120th birthday anniversary of Yu. B. Khariton and the 110th birthday anniversary of Ya. B. Zel’dovich — founders of the modern theory of combustion and detonation. The book is intended as a source of information on the state-of-the-art and worldwide activities in the area of transient deflagrations and detonations. The emphasis is made to both fundamentals and practical applications. The volume will be useful for researchers, power plant designers, and engineers and can serve as a reference book for graduate studies in detonation physics.

The book outlines the state-of-the-art in physics and chemistry of various nonequilibrium phenomena, including the issues of the kinetics of elementary processes during combustion, in plasma, and in the atmosphere; physics of aerosols, clusters, and nanostructures; ignition and combustion of organic, metallized, and synthetic fuels including processes in jet engines; physics of high-speed reactive flows, shock and detonation waves; as well as new technologies based on nonequilibrium physical and chemical processes. On October 17, 2019, the outstanding theoretical physicist Isaak Khalatnikov will turn one hundred years old. His works are devoted to the theoretical problems of quantum physics, superfluidity and superconductivity, quantum electrodynamics and cosmology. In all these areas of physics, Khalatnikov’s papers were an outstanding phenomenon and rightfully entered the treasury of science. We are proud of the fact that Khalatnikov is the founder of the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics and its first director from 1965 till 1992. The broad scope of his scientific interests is manifested in the variety of areas in which the scientific staff of the Landau Institute is still working. In honour of the 100th anniversary of Isaak Khalatnikov, the Landau Institute organizes the international conference. Development of propulsion engines operating on continuous and pulse detonations is a subject of growing interest worldwide. The concept of a detonation engine is attractive for simplicity, easy scaling, reduced fuel consumption, and intrinsic capability of operation from zero approach stream velocity to high supersonic flight speeds. In the detonation-based power plants, detonation is initiated in a tube that serves as the combustor. The propagating detonation wave rapidly burns the fuel in the chamber resulting in a nearly constant-volume heat addition process that produces a high pressure in the combustor and provides the thrust. The operational cycle of such power plants provides a higher thermodynamic efficiency as compared to the Brayton cycle used in gas turbines and ramjets.
